When purchasing cleansers, remember to by mild or light depending on your skin texture. Start with a mild and slowly move towards light when needed. The same strategy should be used with cosmetics; nothing should be put on skin which has the chances to irritate it. Only cosmetics which are do not have oil foundations should be used to avoid further irritation. Instead try to find water based cosmetics. They are more natural and allow pores to breathe. Before going to bed always wash and remove excess makeup. In addition to cosmetics, avoid cold creams and lotions which add to oil build up. Also during the summer and spring seasons, avoid sun screens which are oil based.

Treatments for oily skin include Benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics, and topical vitamin A derivatives. Benzoyl peroxide is a product which can be attained without prescriptions. It is used to reduce bacteria and cleanse pores. The first few uses may cause irritation, but the skin will become accustomed to it over time. Topical antibiotics are used in cases of mild acne. It is a cream which is applied twice a day to reduce bacteria and redness. Topical antibiotics are only available by prescription. Topical vitamin A derivatives are used to help eliminate blackheads, whiteheads and unclogging pores. This is also only available by prescription.

The pores around the nose are also larger because of the larger oil glands. Sebaceous glands are also found along the back, neck, and chest. There is no way to completely eliminate oily skin; the amount of oil produce is based purely on genetics. During puberty oil glands are more active, which sometimes is the cause of acne.
